Baritone Michael Chipman
Baritone Michael Chipman recently sang the role of Ceprano in "Rigoletto" with Hawaii Opera and made his Carnegie Hall debut with the New England Symphonic Ensemble in Haydn's "Mass in Time of War." Previous engagements include singing the bass solo in Bach's Cantata 197 with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, the role of Jesus in Bach's "St.Matthew's Passion" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Handel's "Messiah" with Utah Chamber Artists, and Mozart's "Requiem" with the Utah Symphony and Chorus.
He was chosen to participate in a week-long workshop focusing on Bach cantatas with Ton Koopmann at Carnegie hall and has been a soloist in the Bach Christmas Oratorio with the Orchestra of St. Luke's and the New York Baroque soloists. He has sung with Cincinnati Opera, Lyric Opera Cleveland, Utah Opera, Oberlin Opera Theatre, Utah Festival Opera, and the Brevard Music Festival Opera. He has performed as a soloist with the Utah Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, Honolulu Symphony, National Chamber Orchestra, Oberlin Musical Union and on seven international television and radio broadcasts with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
A former student of Betty Jeanne Chipman in Salt Lake City, Michael is a graduate of Oberlin College Conservatory where he studied with Richard Miller. He studied private voice with Steve Smith of the Juilliard School, with whom he co-authored a book about singing published by Oxford University Press in 2006. He also enjoys teaching voice in his Salt Lake City studio.
