Jessica: Why I Listen

“Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.” – Beethoven

I will never forget my first Utah Chamber Artists concert. It was not too long ago – the Christmas Concert of 2010. I didn’t really have any particular reason for going – a few friends were attending, I have a friend who sings with the group… Really, I had nothing better to do. At least, that was my attitude before the concert began. By the time the lights came up at intermission, I knew I had found my new favorite performing arts group in Salt Lake.

I have attended every possible concert since that first one. At every concert my heart soars, my spirit lifts, and I walk out feeling as if I have just been a part of something truly special. The singers breathe life and beauty into each piece, whether it is a classical recitation, a traditional carol, or something entirely new. There is always a surprise, and I discover something that speaks to me on a personal level. I leave feeling uplifted, with a heightened sense of beauty and understanding.
What’s more, I feel a sincere need to share the joy with others. I always buy two tickets and bring someone new with me, in the hope that others will come to love this group as much as I do. So far, it has totally worked. Further, the shared experience has become a way for me to strengthen bonds with friends and family as we enjoy and discuss the performance.

In short, I come to Utah Chamber Artists concerts because they awaken my spirit and senses and bring them to elevated clarity. They make the world a little more beautiful, life a little more meaningful, and me a little happier. Every time.
